Winters in Wisconsin can be brutal on your home and roof and if you don’t know some important things to look for in your home during winter it could cause you more problems in the future. Here are some important winter roof care tips to look for with your roof in winter.

• Ice Build-Up

Ice can be one of the most common problems for your roof in winter because the water can seep into any cracks and when it freezes it expands allowing more water and ice to form. This cycle repeats until you have major issues, but can be solved early if you look for it. Checking below your roof for any signs of water getting in or ice starting to build is one way to keep damages to a minimum.

• Snow Build-Up on Roof

Snow seems very light but get a lot of it together and mix in ice and it can become very heavy. This can be an issue for your roofing structure to handle if it’s old and weak or wasn’t installed properly. The amount of pressure it can put on your roof is tremendous and if it’s not taken care of can cost you a new roof replacement. Often times our gutters are overlooked in winter because we think that there are no leaves to we need to clean our gutters. In winter having clean and clear gutters are important for when spring rolls around and ice and snow start melting. If your gutters are clogged with ice this can cause the water to run into your house or basement and if it’s cold enough to freeze again can cause even more damage.
