- Longevity is one of the most attractive features of slate roofing, if maintained properly, slate can last for many years. Slate roofing has earned itself the nickname “The Forever Roof“ because in many instances a slate roof will live longer than the homeowners themselves!
- Slate comes in a variety of colors and is consistently beautiful in all its hues. Due to the attractive nature of slate roofing, many historic buildings and elegant homes choose slate as their preferred roof. Aesthetically speaking there are not many roofing options that look a good as a slate roof. Not only does slate make a beautiful looking roof but the material itself is durable enough that it can be made into many aesthetically pleasing shapes.
- Slate roofs are fire resistant. Unlike many roofing materials, slate tiles are completely fireproof.
- Weather resistance is another reason slate roofs are worth the investment. They are waterproof as well as resistant to severe weather and perfect for colder climates. Slate roofs can withstand high winds, heavy snow, and rain. Slate is not affected by fungus and mold nor does it rot. The strengths, as mentioned above, of slate roofs, are the bane of many non-slate roofs.
- Along with being susceptible to many issues non-slate roofs are much less environmentally friendly. Even green asphalt shingles have to be replaced every 15-20 years. These shingles are filling up our landfills. Due to the longevity of slate roofing, slate shingles need to be disposed of much less often, thereby minimizing the carbon footprint.
How to Preserve a Slate Roof:
Slate roofing is an investment in the protection of a home it is a good idea to have your slate roof inspected once a year to ensure that it will last as long as possible:
- Check for any broken or missing slate shingles once a year or after any major storms or winter seasons
